GSA

Every Other Monday
11:50-12:05 pm // Rm 317

The Rainbow Alliance is a safe, supportive space that brings opportunity for change while honoring individuality and confidentiality. It’s much more than a GSA (Gender & Sexuality Alliance); it’s an open community for all who support progress. Some days when we meet, we sit around and talk about our lives, so when we say we’re also a safe space to hang out, we mean it. Bring your ideas for change and your Netflix suggestions. Our doors are open to anyone who supports individuality and equity.

International Club

Thursday // 2:30-4:15 pm // Rm 339

We'll explore other cultures and traditions from around the world. We cook recipes and try food from these cultures, learn about these cultures through movies and TV shows. We also maintain the hydroponics system located upstairs in the square that was grant-funded partly through the German government and Goethe Institut in 2019. Students took part in a conference in Chicago then designed, built, and created a documentary about the experience. We also plan a day trip for late May to Montreal where we visit the city and explore the different cultures within the city (you do NOT need a passport to go! just a birth certificate from the US). Lastly, we also plan international trips for after school ends that are 8-12 days long. These trips usually cost between 3000-4000$ per student and there are some fundraising opportunities.

Literary Magazine

Tuesday // 2:35-3:30 pm // Rm 331
What is Writer’s Block?
Writer’s Block is sort of like a creative writing club, but we're also responsible for trying to encourage more creativity in the rest of the school body as well. That's why, in addition to doing some weekly creative writing ourselves (ranging from found poems to cartoon strips to murals and road-signs), we're also in charge of hosting quarterly Coffee Houses (open mic nights) and a yearly magazine publication (where we publish student poems, stories, and artwork). The Writer's Block Literary Magazine is a collection of creative writing such as poetry, cartoons, stories, and artwork from our very own Milton High School students. Pieces are selected for their beauty, creativity, and personality, and are compiled to share with all.

We meet weekly on Tuesdays after school (from roughly 2:45 to 3:30). Please chat with or email Lindsey Reynolds or Ashley Flatley with any questions or to sign up!

Marine Science & Diving Club

Monday, Bi-Weekly
2:45-3:15 pm // Guidance

The MHS Marine Science and Diving Club aims to introduce and share the wonders of the seven seas with students. We will explore marine biology, marine ecology, oceanography, sustainability, and global warming. Students will also have the opportunity to become dive certified as well as participate in a week-long research trip annually.

Math League

Thursday // 2:35-3:30 pm // Rm 213

Math League is a competitive league that focuses on Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, and Advanced math skills. Students attend 5 meets throughout the school year and weekly practices on Thursdays from 2:40 to 3:30 starting in mid-September. At each meeting, participants have the opportunity to take up to 3 math tests (quietly, individually, and in 12 minutes) on the concepts above or 2 of those and the team test (the only one done cooperatively with your teammates and has a 25-minute time limit). The three highest scores from each test earned by our MHS participants get calculated in our team score. The team with the highest score wins the meet though there are other achievement awards given besides this one.

Let Charity Renning or Sara Meigs know if you would like more information. Show up in room 213 (Ms. Meigs') on a Thursday and try out a practice!

Mock Trial Club

Mondays, Beginning in October // Rm 211

The MHS Mock Trial Team gives students an opportunity to explore the U.S. legal system through a pretend trial. Students play the parts of lawyers and witnesses in a mini-trial, and they learn about topics like burdens of proof, evidence, and litigation tactics. Our team represents its assigned side against teams from other Vermont high schools in front of judges and attorneys from around the state. Preparation usually begins with weekly meetings in January when the trial information is released, and it culminates in the state competition, which is usually held in late March or early April.

National History Day Club

Begins October 2nd

Vermont History Day and National History Day is an exciting educational opportunity that encourages students to develop research and critical thinking skills through project-based learning and the study of history. Students share their projects at the annual state contest at UVM - COVID restrictions will dictate if we are able to go. You will have the opportunity to select any historical topic with this year's theme that you would like to further learn about and explore: Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences. In the past, we have had MHS students qualify for the national competition in Washington D.C. which may go on this year - more guidance will follow. Participating will provide the opportunity to investigate something you are passionate about while also allowing for you to engage with an authentic audience at the state competition.

Neuroscience

Tuesdays // 2:35-3:35 pm // Rm 314

Are you interested in how the brain works? If so, then this club will introduce you to the exciting field of neuroscience. This student-led club will give you the opportunity to gain insight and knowledge into the structure and function of the brain and nervous system, how the brain processes information and communicates responses, diseases and disorders, and current research and technology. Students may be able to receive academic credit in this alternative learning pathway. In February of each year, students are encouraged to compete in the Vermont Brain Bee competition with other students from schools across Vermont. Winners of the Vermont Brain Bee competition are then eligible to compete in the national competition.
