Community Input: FY27 Budget
With the VT Education Funding system there is not a direct correlation between a school district's budget and the town tax rate. Last year, the MTSD budget increased by 7% and yet the tax rate decreased by -5.66%. There have been other years when the budget decreased and the tax rate increased. This is directly tied to the formula the State uses to disburse funds to schools. It is very complicated.
Districts do not receive the ‘estimated’ impact of their budgets on the tax rate until mid-December. They then only have a few short weeks to make adjustments. It is the goal of the MTSD Board of Trustees to bring forward a budget that achieves their goals for a high quality education while also being fiscally responsible.
The MTSD Board of Trustees is seeking community engagement and input to support this year’s budget process. Your perspective will help inform any decisions they may need to meet their goals.

Come cheer them on this Friday, 7PM, at Burlington High School as they face off against Mt. Abe under the lights! 💛⚽💙

Our first academic quarter is coming to a close this week. The final day of the first quarter is Friday, October 31st. That day will be a Make Up Day at MHS.
What are the expectations for Make Up Days at MHS?
Students who are passing all of their classes do not need to attend school.
Any student with a failing grade MUST attend school and work to bring any failing grades up to passing.
Regular class schedules are suspended on Make Up Days, as students can spend time with any teacher that they need to see for extra support or make up work.
Students with failing grades who do not show up at 7:30 will get direct outreach (by phone) from the school to get them in for Make Up Day.
Regularly scheduled bus transportation to and from school will be available to all students.
Breakfast and lunch will be available for all students who attend school on Friday.
This is a strategy that pays great dividends for our students. It rewards students who have all of their grades in order by the end of the quarter and provides targeted support for those who need it.
Both Tech Centers will be running their regular schedules on Friday, October 31st. (Any tech student who needs to do makeup work for MHS can do it between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM.) But all tech schedules and bus schedules will be running normally.
I hope you find this communication helpful. I hope parents and caregivers will help support us in getting our students the support they need.
Many thanks,
Scott
