Service Learning

Milton High School students are expected to complete at least 30 hours of service to their community to foster civic engagement and further their learning. At the end of the service projects, students complete written reflections and make presentations of their learning.
Ideally, service projects are student-generated, based on their interests and the needs of their community. Thus, a broad range of projects may be appropriate, depending on the situations presented. Students research and design their projects, complete their service under the supervision of a mentor, reflect on their learning, and present to a group of their peers and teachers.
Service Learning at MHS is assessed on a pass/fail basis and meets the following Proficiency-Based Graduation Requirement: Learners participate in and contribute to, the enhancement of community life through creating and enacting a proposal for an improvement in the community which takes positive action to resolve conflict, promote equity and/or solve community problems.
It may be possible to earn service learning credit through service to the school community through leadership activities that address our community’s needs.

When can I start my service-learning?
- Service-learning can begin as soon as the summer prior to the start of your 9th-grade year. Students must meet with the service-learning coordinator prior to starting.

Can I start before 9th grade?

Are there any forms to fill out?
- Yes, and you can find them here. They are the Project Sheet, Contract, and Timesheet (this may be done in a different format).
I started my project before getting approval. What should I do?
- Email [email protected] as soon as you can so we can figure out a plan.
Can I do my service in more than one location/project type?
- Yes. Ideally, service projects all fit under one category or umbrella topic, such as “service to youth in Milton.” However, the goal is to foster engagement as much as possible.
Do all 30 hours have to be completed on the same project?

Can I keep track of my time in a different manner?
- Yes. Ms. Carlson will need to email your site/project mentor to confirm that you have completed your hours when you are finished, and you will need to submit your way of keeping track.
Do I need to do a written reflection?
Do I need to present my project?
- Yes, and Ms. Carlson is happy to help you with it. There are a lot of options for how to present, and this should not be a barrier for you. The requirements are here (URL).
Is it possible to earn credit for club participation?
- Kind of. It is possible to earn credit for leadership that is in service to the school community, which is a little different from being a club member. Positions of leadership can include being an advisory representative, serving on an interview committee, being the president or organizer of an activity, or something similar. It’s recommended that you speak with Ms. Carlson to clarify.
Can I get credit for a paid activity?
- No. This is for volunteer service only.
